A man Toronto Police consider to be dangerous has escaped their custody at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Const. Jen Sidhu tells NEWSTALK 1010 Andrew Smith was arrested March 7 for possession of a dangerous weapon and for allegedly threatening the death of a security officer at the University of Toronto downtown.
He has been in custody ever since.
Sidhu says Smith was brought to Mount Sinai near University Ave and Gerrard St W Wednesday after complaining of some sort of medical problem. Smith was last seen around 7 a.m.
It is not clear how he escaped police and Sidhu could not say what kind of security was in place around Smith.
Police say Smith should not be approached. If you see him, call 911.
Smith is described as standing 5'11 with a thin build and receding brown hair. He was last seen wearing eyeglasses, a navy sweater, brown pants and dark coloured-shoes.
U of T campus police have issued a community alert, saying smith is known to frequent the St. George Campus.
