A 56-year-old man is dead after a car and transport truck collided on Hwy 401 in Etobicoke Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called around 5:20 a.m. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The westbound lanes of the 401 were closed at Dixon/Martin Grove for the investigation and cleanup.

OPP Sgt Kerry Schmidt says the driver killed had called 911 himself at about 5:15 a.m. to report that his car had stalled in the middle of the highway. Before officers arrived, a vehicle had struck the car from behind. The stalled vehicle was then hit a second time by a transport truck.

Cristinel Murariu of Toronto was killed in the crash.

Schmidt says it is still unclear why the man's vehicle had stalled.
