FORT ERIE, Ont. - The Niagara Regional Police Marine Unit have recovered a body in the Niagara River. Police have not yet confirmed if the deceased is a suspect who went missing yesterday in the river in Fort Erie, Ontario.
Around 6:30 p.m Friday evening, police responded to a report of three people in distress in the water.
They say a bystander was able to rescue a 29-year-old woman and that she was taken to hospital in critical condition.
A child was also rescued who police initially said was taken to a local hospital for further assessment.
The third person, identified as a 28-year-old Joshawa Raymond Douglas Brooks, was still missing as of Saturday morning.
NEWSTALK1010 has since learned that the 29 year-old woman has died of her injuries in hospital.
The child remains in stable condition.
Earlier, police issued a news release saying a man is wanted on an attempted murder charge in relation to the child, as well as breach of probation.
Along with a Niagara Region Police marine unit the search effort also involved the Royal Canadian Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol and helicopters from the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
Once again, police have not yet confirmed if the body located in the water is that of the missing man.
