The TTC says a man who drove his car 700 m underground into a streetcar tunnel claims he was just following his GPS.
The driver made it nearly to the platform at Union Station after going subterranean Queen's Quay near Bay St just before 4 a.m. Thursday. The driver took off on foot but later returned.
The incident disrupted service on two of Toronto's busiest streetcar routes-the 510 and 509-for nearly seven hours. A crane was needed to get the car back out to the street.
It is beyond TTC spokesman Brad Ross how someone could ignore all the flashing lights, signs and continue down a set of elevated tracks that would scrape up a vehicle's undercarriage.
"They keep going, I guess in hopes of finding some magical portal that will get them out of there safely."
Last April, another driver made the same mistake. An SUV with Alberta plates was ditched in nearly the same spot, 600 m in the tunnel after driving in early on Sunday morning.
Ross says the driver was charged by transit enforcement officers though it's not clear with what.
