A fire at a Toronto Community Housing building in Scarborough that claimed the lives of four seniors, has now been determined to be deliberately set.
The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the building on Neilson Road back on February 5th.
All four people who died were found in the hallway of the building and all were overcome by smoke.
According to the Ontario Fire Marshall, they say the cause of the fire has been classified as intentional.
They say the investigation has revealed that the fire started in combustible chairs left in an alcove where two hallways intersect on the fifth floor.
Toronto Fire has already charged Toronto Community Housing with permitting combustible materials to accumulate in a means of egress, failing to instruct supervisory staff in the fire emergency procedures in the fire safety plan before they are given any responsibility for fire safety; and failing to implement the approved fire safety plan in the building.
These charges are currently before the courts and the TCHC says they will continue to fight those charges.
Three peopel were found dead at the scene, while the fourth person died two months later in hospital. In all, 15 people were sent to hospital from the building, which was relatively new at teh time of the fire.
It has 125 units and houses people who have mainly Punjabi and Tamil backgrounds
Mayor John Tory was out of town in Ottawa at the time of the fire.
