Peel Regional Police say the man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 11-year old daughter is in hospital due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Roopesh Rajkumar, 41, was arrested early Friday morning after the body of Riya Rajkumar was found in his Brampton home.
He has been in hospital ever since his arrest.
"Originally when he was arrested, he was arrested by OPP which meant we had to go over and take custody of him," Peel Const. Danny Marttini told NEWSTALK1010. "When our officers went to take custody of him, they noticed that he seemed to have some sort of medical issue. They weren't sure what was wrong with him."
Marttini said an ambulance was called, but EMS wasn't able to identify the problem.
"He was then transported to a hospital where on that evaluation they were able to realize what had actually gone on, and then he was transported to a trauma centre."
The SIU was contacted to investigate and have since determined that they won't be invoking their mandate.
Rajkumar remains in the custody of Ontario Correctional Services, and his scheduled court appearance on Tuesday depends on whether he is medically cleared to attend.
"The reality is until he's medically cleared, he will not be able to attend court," Marttini added.
Police will not reveal any details about the gunshot wound itself.
After a candlelight vigil to remember Riya's life was held at Meadowvale Village Green Saturday evening, a second one is scheduled for Brampton's Garden Square on Tuesday evening.
The community is invited to attend from 5:45 until 7:00 p.m.
