A fire broke out in a townhouse and spread to an adjoining building on Queen st. East near Sumach Thursday night. Toronto Fire Service responded to the call just after 8:30 p.m. The fire was quickly upped to a 3 alarm blaze involving some 20 crews and over 60 trucks.
Early in the search through the burining buildings, one of the firefighters suffered a leg injury, but Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told CP24 his firefighter wasn't phased by the setback.
"Very heavy smoke and limited visability fell down a partial flight of stairs. Good news is he's been assessed by paramedics on scene and cleared and he's actually got his bunker gear back on."
Pegg believes all the occupants of the buildings, which housed residential and commercial properties got out unharmed. Those needing shelter were offered a TTC shelter bus.
According to Pegg, the fire started in a smaller townhouse and spread to the adjoining three story building beside it.
As for a cause of this fire, Pegg conceeded it is far too early to determine.
"We wont know until we get into the investigation and complete origin and cause of the fire."
Queen St was closed in both directions from Power St to River St. but Pegg acknowledged the perimeter around the fire would be a little larger and also confirmed some of the crrews would likely spend most of the night at the scene watching for hot spots.
