An elderly woman is fighting for her life after a massive five-alarm fire that broke out at a highrise in North York Thursday night.
Firefighters were called to 6250 Bathurst Street, just south of Steeles, around 8:30 p.m.
Acting Fire Chief Jim Jessop says the fire broke out in a 5th-floor unit of the 14-floor building. It is a Toronto Community Housing building, which reportedly houses many seniors.
Initially, there were reports that the building had been evacuated, but we have since learned that only the 5th floor - where "the unit of origin" is located - was evacuated.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Jessop said the rest of the tenants in the building were advised to "shelter in place".
Four people were injured, including a woman, believed to be in her 70s who is in life-threatening condition. She and one other person were hurt. Two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is unclear at this time.
The Toronto Fire Investigation's Division is on the scene and will look into the origin of this fire. The Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been called in.
About 30 people were forced from their homes. The Office of Emergency Management and TCH were on site to make sure everyone was taken care of.
Bathurst, just south of Steeles, remained closed Friday morning.
