Toronto Police have charged an 81-year-old man with second-degree murder in the death of his wife.
Police were called to a bungalow on Farley Cr near Martin Grove Rd and the Westway at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday where they found a 76-year-old woman with trauma to her body. Paramedics pronounced her dead.
Police have identified the victim as Barbara Kovic and the man charged as Ante Kovic.
On Thursday morning, Matthew Wilson emerged from the home he grew up in, a few doors down from the couple, looking stunned.
"They were great, just nice, old people," Wilson told reporters.
But there were potential signs of trouble. Wilson says police had been by the bungalow in the last few weeks. He believes Ante has Alzheimer's.
In happier moments, Wilson recalls the couple giving him fruit from trees in their backyard as a boy. He says Barbara shuttled his grandmother to doctor's appointments and to the grocery store when he couldn't.
Wilson says the Kovics' grandchildren played with his new dog at Christmastime and that Barbara and her son stopped by.
"Everything was perfect at Christmas."
Barbara Kovic's death is Toronto's first homicide of 2018.
