TORONTO - A man accused of killing his 11-year-old daughter has died in hospital, Peel Police confirm.
Roopesh Rajkumar died on Wednesday evening after spending five days at Sunnybrook Hospital with what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
His daughter, Riya Rajkumar, became the subject of an Amber Alert late Thursday night.
Shortly after the alert was sent out, police found her body inside her father's home.
Rajkumar was charged with first-degree murder in Riya's death.
The day Riya died - Valentine's Day - was also her and her mother's birthdays.
Riya was laid to rest in a funeral held in Etobicoke Wednesday morning.
Peel Police say they are continuing their investigation into Riya's death and will be scheduling an autopsy in the coming days.
“My heart goes out to Riya’s mother and her family," Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said in a written statement Wednesday evening. "May she have the strength and support of her family and community to get through this tragic situation and one day find closure."
