Ontario Provincial Police and units from other police forces were on the hunt for an ambulance Sunday morning after it was stolen from Cambridge Memorial hopsital.
Emergency officials confirmed to CTV News that at around midnight, a paramedic was sitting in the passenger's seat of an ambulance in the parking lot of Cambridge Memorial Hospital with the keys in the ignition. When she noticed someone lurking near the vehicle, officials say the paramedic went to lock the doors but the man jumped into the driver's seat before she could.
The paramedic jumped out and the suspect took off in the vehicle.
OPP Sgt. Peter Leon told CP24 Waterloo Regional Police were able to locate and track the ambulance through GPS. They found it on the 401 in Halton Region.
When it entered Peel region OPP officers joined the pursuit.
Around 6 a.m. OPP officers were able to safely stop the vehicle north of Barrie using a spike belt.
A 29-year-old male suspect was arrested without incident.
He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor-vehicle, possession of stolen property, and flight from police.
The ambulance will go through a very thorough inspection before it goes back on the road.
