A man considered violent and dangerous has been captured.
39-year-old Justin Yates escaped custody while at Toronto General Hospital Jan. 26.
Police said he was there for an “undisclosed reason.”
Yates was able to evade guards, take off his leg shackles, hail a cab and get dropped off at Yonge and Dundas.
Acting on a tip from the public police found Yates in the Dundas Street East and Parliament Street area Saturday at 6 p.m.
There officers saw him exiting a building, when he saw them he ran back into the building with officers right behind him. He entered an apartment on the third floor where he had broken a window and was trying to jump out. As the officers tried to handcuff him, Yates picked up a broken piece of glass and started slashing. They let go and he jumped trhough the window and fell to the ground.
Police say he then took off his shoes and ran into another building. They conducted a room-by-room search and were able to finally arrest him.
Yates is charged with two counts of escape lawful custody, possession of property obtained by crime, Assaulting an officer with a weapon and mischief under $5000.
Police say without the assistance of the public, he would not have been captured. The Toronto Police Service extends their thanks to the public and media.
