With four months less a day left to go until the October 22 municipal election, Mayor John Tory set out Saturday morning to do his very first canvass of the campaign.
Tory visited the Midtown area, near Bayview and Davisville, speaking to residents about what their major concerns are as he looks to get a second term.
"I think getting out door to door is very important because it allows you to hear about different things," the Mayor told CP24. "In the first few houses, I've heard about transportation, traffic and public transit and the need to build public transit."
"I just heard about sometimes in neighbourhoods where there's redevelopment going on, there's a lot of mess for a long time - a longer time than there should be - and people want to make sure we enforce the rules about how long you can make a mess when there's construction."
About 100 of Tory's volunteers were out with him, but he says he will need thousands more volunteers. He's already raised about $1 million for his campaign.
Speaking to Newstalk 1010, Tory's campaign co-chair Vince Gasparro shed some light on some policy issues the mayor believes Torontonians want him to take action on.
"We know that transportation and infrastructure are issues that he cares deeply about, affordability in the city, in particular housing has been a priority for him."
Gasparro also noted that providing continuous stability at city hall and effective leadership are also priorities.
"Continuing to build on that successful track record is extremely important."
Meantime, from now until election day, the Mayor said he will be doing two jobs - being the city's incumbent Mayor while campaigning to stay in the city's top seat.
"I have a job. I am the Mayor, and that means I'm responsible," he said. "Some days it's to my disadvantage that I'm answering for things that are going on that are challenging in the city, but at the end of the day I have the job which I feel very privileged to have. But I have to keep doing it - right until election day."
"If I do the job well, people will be comfortable giving me four more years," he added.
