A snow storm expected to keep hammering the Golden Horseshoe into Wednesday has lightened up a little.
Winter storm warnings and special weather statements for most regions have been dropped. The exception is the Niagara region which remains under a winter storm warning. Environment Canada reported snowfall totals of between 20 and 30 cm by 9 a.m. on Tuesday with the possibility of another 15-20 cm by the time system moves out Wednesday morning.
Meteorologist Mark Schuster expects the rest of the Golden Horseshoe to pick up another 2 cm through the day and another 2 cm tonight with some lingering flurries possible early Wednesday.
That's on top of snow that started to pile up Monday, as much as 30 cm near Hamilton Mountain, 10-15 cm in Mississauga while some parts of Toronto saw as little as 1 cm.
Schuster says strong winds could continue to blow the fresh snow around and cause problems with visibility. Even with less accumulation than expected snow could slow Tuesday's afternoon rush.
Once the snow stops, southern Ontario will warm up above zero into Friday. But Schuster says they are watching a system that could bring either rain or snow to the region on Saturday, just before the official arrival of spring on Monday.
Hundreds of flights at Toronto's Pearson International Airport were cancelled Tuesday. The wintry weather has also affected some post-secondary institutions, childcare, March Break planning and municipal services.
