A 58-year-old nurse has been charged by Peel Police after a confidentiality breach at the William Osler Health System.
A statement from a spokesperson says an internal investigation found a hospital employee, "viewed or inappropriately used patients' personal health information to access narcotics (Percocet) for non-hospital use."
The statement says the employee has been off the job since the investigation began.
Police allege that 58-year-old Catharina Demme gained access to patient names from a list on a computer database, and that she only had limited access to patient information.
She has been charged with breach of trust and theft under $5,000.00.
The hospital says it has put, "additional controls in place to help ensure this type of activity does not happen again. The hospital is also working to further strengthen policies and procedures related to this type of event, including regular proactive audits and reviews."
William Osler Health operates Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and the new Peel Memorial.
