Some of Ontario's public service workers are being asked to voluntarily say goodbye to their jobs as the provincial government looks to downsize.
Our media partner CTV News first obtained the memo sent out by the Secretary of the Cabinet to thousands of public service workers on Wednesday.
The memo stated that the government was offering buyout packages that include a "time-limited transition exit initiative" and a "voluntary exit program."
The memo touches on the fiscal challenges faced by the Doug Ford government and how it is hoping to avoid involuntary job losses while managing compensation costs.
It comes on the heels of the Financial Accountability Officer saying that tough choices need to be made in order for the provincial government to balance the books.
The packages are being offered for a short period of time - from January 1, 2019 until the end of February.
Already available to unionized members of civil service, the memo states that the transition exit initiative is being extended to the 7,500 to 10,000 non-unionized management level employees.
The memo states that "the current focus is on leveraging available programs that will allow employees to exit the organization on a voluntary basis.”
Employees who accept a package have until the end of December 2019 to vacate their posts.
