BARRIE, Ont. - Provincial police say one person is dead and two others injured critically after a multi-vehicle crash near Barrie on Christmas Day.
Police say the collision involving five vehicles happened on County Road 53, between Carson and Sunnidale roads, northeast of the city.
Images from the scene shared by OPP on social media show heavily damaged vehicles scattered around a snow-covered two lane road.
Police have not identified the victim or said what caused the crash.
A snow squall warning was in effect for the area where the crash occurred Monday, as Environment Canada warned about the possibility of sudden near-zero visibility in some areas.
Meantime, also north of Toronto, a 17-year-old was killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash west of Orangeville.
The OPP say it also happened on Monday just after 1:00 p.m. on Dufferin County Road 109.
According to police, a car traveling eastbound crossed into the oncoming lane and sideswiped a truck.
The victim has been identified as Erin Eidt of Shelburne. A man in the pickup suffered minor injuries while a woman in the passenger seat was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Ontario Provincial Police say they are getting reports of snow bands on Tuesday afternoon which can possibly lead to near-zero visibility at times.
Sergeant Peter Leon says if you're driving up north this afternoon or anytime over the next few days, be prepared for the conditions
"We certainly recommend that you pack extra clothing with you, make sure you have your roadside safety kit," Sergeant Leon told NEWSTALK 1010.
"But most importantly, travel with a fully-charged telecommunications device so if you do break down you can call for help."
Sergeant Leon says you can always reach out to your local OPP detachment in the case of an emergency.
He added it is important for drivers to clear excess snow that has accumulated on top of vehicles to help prevent accidents from happening.
"Clean the snow, give yourself a proper view of the road ahead of you.
"And remember anything that's on your vehicle is going to get sent back to those people that are travelling behind you and that's not fair to them either."
