Toronto police say they've arrested a man in an alleged sexual assault involving a woman trying to use a ridesharing app.
Police say the 21-year-old woman had ordered a ride from an unspecified service and got into a car with a man claiming to be her driver.
They allege the man then drove the woman to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her.
They also allege he then stole her cellphone before forcing her out of the vehicle.
A 33-year-old man from Ajax, is now charged with one count each of sexual assault, robbery and overcome resistance by choking.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A spokesperson from Uber responded to our requests for an interview with a statement, saying, "What has been described is horrible and has no place anywhere. As soon as we learned of this report, we immediately removed the individual's access to the app and revoked his license from the city. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and will continue to support their investigation."
A spokesperson from Lyft also responded with a statement that echoed those sentiments, "Safety is fundamental to Lyft and the incident described is frightening. While this did not occur on the Lyft platform, as soon as we became aware of the incident, we permanently removed the driver's access to Lyft. We have been in touch with the authorities and will continue to help in every way we can."
