Toronto Police say a shooting that targeted a pregnant woman and her boyfriend as they slept has 'gang tones'.
The couple was shot in bed in their apartment on Kipling Ave, south of Steeles Ave W at about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday. Two children, aged four and eight, sleeping in another bedroom did not witness the shooting and were not hurt.
Superintendent Ron Taverner says three black men dressed in dark clothing and wearing some kind of disguise got into the apartment and opened fire.
"It's disgusting to think that these things happen," Taverner told reporters Tuesday morning. "These types of crime occur when (the perpetrators) have no sense of value of life."
The woman, three months pregnant, was hit by bullets in the chest and shoulder. The man was hit in the hand and leg. Both victims' have been stabilized in hospital with injuries that are considered to be serious but not life-threatening. The woman's fetus is not believed to be in any danger.
The man shot was wanted by police for a number of offences including attempted murder and a home invasion-style robbery. Taverner speculates that Tuesday's shooting may have been retaliation for something.
This is not the first time a pregnant woman has been shot in Rexdale.
Last June, Candice Rochelle Bobb, five months pregnant was shot while sitting in a car less than 3 km from the scene of Tuesday's shooting. Bobb was killed. Her son, Kyrie was delivered prematurely and died three weeks later.
Investigators have said Bobb was not the target of the shooting but that "something in the movement of that vehicle" prompted the gunfire.
Toronto Police are offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to conviction of Bobb's killer or killers.
