Hamilton Police has now taken over the investigation into the fire that killed a little boy in Hamilton on Monday.
The 3-year-old boy was pulled from the basement of the semi-detached home on Golden Orchard Drive, near the Lincoln Alexander Expressway and Garth Street, without vital signs.
He was later pronounced dead by paramedics.
The mother of the child managed to make it out onto the front lawn and directed firefighters to the basement to seach for the boy.
There's still nothing yet on what caused the fire, or even if the fire is considered suspicious.
Police aren't giving any additional information and even went as far as putting in a release that "any requests for comment or interviews at this time will be respectfully declined until additional information can be made available."
But NEWSTALK1010's public safety analyst, Chris Lewis, who is also a former commissioner of the OPP, says something doesn't add up here.
"It just kind of looks like this is more serious than the death of a child, so they must suspect some criminal activity of some sort."
He says police often work with the coroner in any death investigation, but says it's only when there is something criminal at play will they take carriage of the investigation.
NEWSTALK1010 has also learned that the police were given the reigns after a discussion with the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office.
