A gelatin factory at the edge of the Junction Triangle has been evacuated after a chemical mixing mistake.
Toronto Police Const. Allyson Douglas-Cooke tells NEWSTALK 1010 at 10 a.m. Thursday a man outside near Paton Rd and Wade Ave reported a fog over the area and that he and others were having difficulty breathing.
A hazardous materials team from Toronto Fire investigated on scene and determined the fog was the result of hydrochloric and sulfuric acids being 'mixed in error'.
People living and working nearby were asked to stay inside and to keep their windows and doors closed.
Fire trucks converged on 60 Paton Ave, home to Nitta Gelatin. Hydrochloric acid is sometimes used in the production of gelatin.
After decontamination, Toronto Fire says 11 people were treated for minor throat and eye irritation. No one was seriously hurt.
