Halton Regional Police want to know how a 13 year-old ended up behind the wheel of a car that crashed in Oakville.
It happened just before 5 o'clock this morning.
A 14 year-old passenger is fighting for his life at a trauma centre in Hamilton. A 16 year-old passenger suffered serious injuries.
"How did the 13 year-old end up behind the wheel, what the three boys were doing that morning, where they're coming from, where they're going to" - just some of the questions Detective Constable Thien-An Vu tells Newstalk1010 they're looking into.
"The SUV belongs to the parents of the driver - the 13 year-old," says Det. Constable Vu.
The SUV was travelling southbound on 8th Line when the driver apparently lost control, just before the intersection of North Service Road. It then plowed through a chain-link fence and struck a concrete median on the westbound lanes of the QEW. No other vehicles were hit.
The westbound lanes of the QEW were closed for about 4 hours during the investigation, but have since been fully reopened to traffic.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
"If there's anyone who has any information, perhaps saw what happened, was driving in the area with a dashcam, and they haven't spoken to us, we'd very much like to hear from them."
Police say the 13 year-old suffered minor injuries.
"Inexperience and speed were factors in this collision and that's something we'll be delving into a bit more in our investigation."
No charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing.
