Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are to be back online.
As of 9 a.m. eastern time Sunday, all were back up and running.
All three social media platforms, including Facebook Messenger, were not loading as of early Sunday morning.
Downdetector.com, a site that monitors site outages, shows Facebook went down around 6:30 a.m. in much of the world.
It's still not clear what caused the outage but Newstalk 1010 Tech expert Marc Salzman says no one lost any information.
"This is all what we call in the cloud," says Salzman. "All of your photos, your posts, your comments are on their servers so nothing is at stake here. It's just that you weren't able to access your information for a period of about two and a half hours."
This is the second time Facebook users have experienced an outage in recent memory. The last time was just over a month ago and in that instance, Facebook blamed a server configuration issue for the outage that affected significant parts of North America and Europe.
There are more than 1.52 billion daily active Facebook users, according to the social media network's website.
"Not everyone knows that Facebook owns Instagram and Whatsapp," says Salzman. "Keep in mind if it's something on the infrastructure side like a server configuration issue, that could impact the other networks they own.
Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.
Salzman also notes that the timing of the problem worked to Facebook's advantage, as it was not during peak usage hours.
