Some garbage collectors in Peel Region are walking picket lines this morning in a strike that could affect as many as 160,000 homes.
Talks between Emterra Environmental and the union representing roughly 100 workers broke off Wednesday night in an attempt to lock down Liuna Local 183's first ever contract. Liuna spokesperson Jason Ottey tells NEWSTALK 1010's sister station CP24 they are after a contract with wages and benefits that mirror the other agreement for waste collection in Peel.
The work stoppage affects all of Caledon, Mississauga west of the Credit River and Fletcher's Creek and Brampton west of Hwy 410 and north of Bovaird Dr. You can find a mapĀ of the impacted areas by CLICKING HERE.
Emterra is responsible for roughly 60% of the waste collection across Peel and continues to be, strike or not.
"We are asking our residents, for the time being, to continue to set their waste and recyclables and organic material out on their regular collection day," Director of Peel Waste Management Norm Lee tells NEWSTALK 1010. "If it's not collected that day they can leave it out and it will be collected in one of the following days."
Staff say they might change their advisories to residents over the weekend in time for Monday morning.
Emterra has not yet said how it plans to carry out pickup during the strike.
Waste can also be dropped off at the region's Community Recycling Centres for free.
