Investigators are trying to determine how a dump truck's bucket or box became wedged under an overpass along highway 401.
The snafu closed westbound lanes of Hwy 401 at Keele for several hours Thursday stretching into the afternoon rush.
OPP Sgt. Dean Korn tells NEWSTALK 1010 witnesses saw the truck moving toward a Hwy 400 overpass at around 1 p.m. with its bucket elevated. The bucket hit the overpass as the truck drove through.
"The box became detached from the truck and was left leaning against the truck and was left leaning up against the overpass at an angle," Korn said. "The truck itself continued on a short distance before pulling over to the right shoulder.
At this point police do not believe the driver of the truck was impaired by drugs or alcohol. They will examine whether driver error or a mechanical failure are behind the crash. Korn says the driver could face charges if they are found to be at fault.
Ministry of Transportation engineers were brought in to check the underpass but damage to it was ultimately found to be superficial.
A dump truck with its bucket raised clipped a sign over Hwy 400 near Aurora Rd on September 29th forcing a closure of the highway.
In March, Sukhvinder Rai was found guilty of dangerous driving in a crash that closed the Burlington Skyway for several days, including over the Civic Holiday weekend in 2014. The elevated bucket of Rai's truck crashed into scaffolding on the under-construction bridge. Tests showed Rai's blood alcohol content five hours after the crash was more than twice the legal limit but impaired driving charges against him were thrown out because the judge in case found the OPP had mishandled breath tests, waiting too long to administer them.
