There were 54 people on board a Porter Airlines flight from Ottawa to Toronto on Monday morning, when the plane suddenly took evasive action over lake Ontario.
The Transportation Safety Board says there was a 'risk of a collision' with an object in nine thousand feet in the air.
It happened around 7:30 on Monday, not far from Pickering.
Two crew members suffered minor injuries, but they've since been relased from hospital.
"It's involving a Porter Aircraft and an unidentified object, likely an unmanned aerial vehicle, like a drone." says Julie Leroux, a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board.
The plane did manage to land safely at the Billy Bishop Airport, without incident.
None of the passengers on board were hurt.
Investigators on Mondat afternoon admitted it will be tough to figure out what the object was.
"We have the flight data recorder and we have the cockjpit voice recorder, so hopefully we're able to figure it out from that." says investigator Peter Rowntree.
He says the black boxes will be able to better tell them what sort of evasive action the pilot took.
As for where it happened, Rowntree says it was about 55kms from the airport over Lake Ontario, but closer to the US border.
Porter Airlines released the following statement:
A Porter aircraft was on its initial approach to Billy Bishop Airport for landing. It was at an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet over Lake Ontario near Pickering when the pilots noticed an object in the distance. As they approached the object, they realized it was very close to their flight path and decided to take appropriate evasive action. There was no contact between the aircraft and object.
The pilots’ initial assessment was that it looked like a balloon. After debriefing, there is potential that the object was a drone.
Porter is working with the Transportation Safety Board as they investigate the incident.
Two flight attendants sustained minor injuries. They were taken to hospital and released. There were no reported passenger injuries.
The incident took place at approximately 7:30 a.m. The flight was arriving in Toronto from Ottawa with 54 passengers.
