Weekend: Check. Beach day: Check. Swimming in the lake: uh .... think again.
As is protocol after any heavy rainstorm, Toronto Public Health recommends swimmers stay out of Lake Ontario and the city's rivers and streams for 48 hours.
Officials advise the public to especially avoid the water at the following beaches:
Friday's heavy rainfall wasn't quite a repeat of what Toronto saw earlier in the month, but it did result in a flooded out Lake Shore Blvd. around the Exhibition grounds. Underpasses in the downtown Core, Union Station and Billy Bishop Airport also felt the brunt of the storm.
Toronto Public Health says high levels of bacteria can flow into the city's waterways after a rainstorm, due to water pollution from sewer overflows and stormwater runoff.
In addition, heavy rains can pick up any trash left on city streets and push it into the lake.
