Halton Police believe a medical issue is what may have led to a 73-year-old man driving erratically and ending up on the sidewalk, killing a woman and seriously injuring a man in Burlington.
It happened at about 10 a.m. Saturday on Fairview Street.
Investigators from 30 Division told NEWSTALK1010 the car ended up in the opposite lane of traffic before it went up on the sidewalk, first striking a 19-year-old man who was walking along the sidewalk.
It then continued on, hitting a 58-year-old Burlington woman who was standing outside of a now-shuttered restaurant.
The car finally stopped on the restaurant's patio.
Police say the 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not been identified.
The 19-year-old Burlington man was airlifted to hospital in Hamilton with life-threatening injuries. His leg had to be amputated below the knee. His condition was listed as serious as of late Saturday afternoon.
The driver - also a resident of Burlington - has been treated in hospital for head injuries. His condition has been stabilized and his family is aware of what happened.
Police closed a section of Fairview Street between Woodview Road and Commerce Court for the investigation.
