A 40-year-old Toronto man has been charged after allegedly trying to steal a fire truck Friday morning.
Police say a call came in around 8:20 a.m. from a man who said he was stuck on the Scarborough buffs in heavy rain and needed to be rescued.
Emergency crews did not have an exact location for the man, but began searching the area south of the intersection of Kingston Rd. and McCowan.
But it ended up being a wild goose chase.
"We found no one," Toronto Police Const. David Hopkinson told NEWSTALK1010. "The person wasn't stuck on the bluffs."
"In fact, he jumped into one of the fire trucks [and] tried to steal it."
The truck the man jumped into was left running near a green space at the foot of Lyme Regis Crescent. He didn't get very far before he was arrested.
Toronto Police have identified the suspect as Jermaine Nichols. He faces one count of attempted theft and one count of fail to comply with recognizance.
