A man is dead and a police officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a shootout overnight in Toronto.
It happened around midnight, outside an Irish pub on Hymus Road, south of Warden and Eglinton.
The province's Special Investigations Unit says, "There was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the man, and the man was struck multiple times."
Police officials say the officer was hit in the chest and that his Kevlar vest saved his life.
"Our officer is okay," police chief Mark Saunders told reporters at the scene. "He will be released from the hospital at some point in time."
Toronto Police Association President, Mike McCormack, told NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning that the officer was hit just below his heart. He has severe bruising to his chest.
"We're just fortunate...that that officer had his vest on otherwise we'd be talking about an officer's funeral," McCormack said.
He says the injured officer is a married father with a young child.
