What is beer and wine in corner stores going to cost you, the taxpayer?
A report suggests the government could be on the hook for millions.
Sources tell the Toronto Star that breaking the province's 10 year deal with the Beer Store could lead to $100 million in penalties.
But in an interview on NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning, Finance Minister Vic Fedeli claimed any number is, "premature."
"We plan on negotiating in good faith," Fedeli said. "We're looking forward to working with any partner who wants to work with us in good faith to make that promise a reality."
He wouldn't provide a cost estimate or a timeline for the plan.
We learned Thursday that Fedeli told a crowd that Queen's Park will start treating Ontarians like, "responsible adults."
He said the government is working to expand the sale of beer and wine to corner stores, box stores and more grocery stores.
The Star reports that the deal is in place until 2025 and Queen’s Park would have to pay the Beer Store damages if it is broken.
Under that deal, the Beer Store reportedly agreed to spend $100 million on improvements to its stores in the first four years.
