Durham Regional Police are trying to figure out who is responsible for vandalizing several grave sites at Uxbridge Cemetery.
Police believe a number of headstones and monuments were deliberately cracked sometime between Saturday November 10 and Sunday November 11. The destruction was discovered by someone visiting a deceased loved one.
Const. George Tudos says some of the stones are so badly damaged they need to be replaced. But that's not the worst part.
"The sentimental value is what really matters in this case here. There's are loved ones that have passed away and these are memories for some of the families," Tudos told NEWSTALK 1010 Friday.
Tudos thinks last weekend's vandalism is different than thefts from a cemetery in Whitby last month.
Police allege that hundreds of bronze vases were taken from Mount Lawn Cemetery between October 3 and October 6.
Michael Audino faces charges including theft. Police have also issued an arrest warrant for Marion Pellicore. Some of the vases were recovered.
It does not appear that anything was stolen from Uxbridge Cemetery.
Police have no description of the person or persons behind the vandalism.
"This is where we really tend to lean towards our community and any witnesses who could help us out here," Tudos said.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Det.-Cst. Todorovski at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2365 or to contact Crime Stoppers.
