A fire at an automobile scrap yard in Mississauga Thursday evening got a lot of people's attention.
The black smoke emanating from the Cooksville Auto Wreckers at 3402 Mavis Road was visible for many kilometres in all directions.
Peel Regional Police Const. Sarah Patten confirmed to NEWSTALK 1010 they received a call for a fire just before 7 p.m.
Mississauga Fire called out 3 alarms and brought in multiple trucks to try and knock down the fire, one Mississauga District Chief Paul Richard conceeded was a tough get.
"We have a large pile of tires as well as some crushed cars that are burning and they're compressed. And what happens is the water has trouble penetrating to the fire."
Richard added his crews will likely spend the entire night and parts of Friday morning trying to fully extinguish the blaze.
Const. Patten also confirmed there were no reports of injuries from the fire, but the heavy smoke prompted evacuations from the immediate area and warnings to residents to keep their doors and windows closed.
"It is really thicker in the areas where the wind is blowing, so when the wind shifts the smoke can end up thicker in other areas."
The area bordering Mavis Road, Southbound Burnhamthorpe, Central Parkway and Wolfedale Road were closed off to traffic.
The Fire Marshal's office was also on scene to investigate the cause.
