Last week, Toronto Fire warned the public about the increase in balcony fires due to discarded cigarettes. This morning, firefighters faced yet another blaze on a downtown balcony -- again the cause has been attributed to a carelessly discarded cigarette.
Officials stressed in a press conference on June 7 that there had been 27 balcony fires this year, causing more than $300,000 in property damage. That the number has since grown to 30.
Today’s fire was sparked around 7 a.m. on a seventh floor balcony of a high-rise building on Adelaide Street West near John Street. Video from the scene shows flames surrounding a barbeque while puffs of dark smoke billow over the balcony railing.
No one was injured. Toronto Fire later confirmed that the fire was sparked by a cigarette discarded from a balcony above the site of the blaze.
