Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur is facing a new charge of first-degree murder in the death of a now-identified John Doe.
Last week, Toronto Police said they had identified a suspected victim of McArthur's in a post-mortem photo released to the public in early March.
In court Monday morning, we learned the man's name is Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam.
Police say they believe he was killed between September and December of 2015.
Kanagaratnam was 37 at the time and had been living in Scarborough after coming to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2010.
Police say his direct family still lives overseas and investigators have had to use a Tamil interpreter to learn more about his background.
Det. Hank Idsinga says while Kanagaratnam had more distant family in the GTA, he was never reported missing.
Idsinga says this eighth alleged victim doesn’t quite fit the profile, as police have not found any previous links to Toronto’s gay community.
McArthur now faces eight counts of first-degree murder.
