Global Affairs Canada confirms one of the five people killed after gunfire broke out at crowded beachfront nightclub in Playa del Carmen, Mexico early Monday, is Canadian.
Federal officials initially said they were working to verify whether there was a second Canadian fatality.
But Global Affairs says they have determined only one of the dead was Canadian and identify him as Kirk Wilson of Toronto.
Tributes are pouring in for the 49-year-old who was married with two children and living in the Hamilton, Ontario, area.
Longtime friend Neil Forester says Wilson was working security at the annual B-P-M music festival and was one of the people from the Toronto area lending a hand to the festival's Canadian organizers.
Mexican officials also say an Italian and a Colombian were among the dead.
The U-S Embassy confirms an American citizen also died.
Officials in Mexico say they have ruled out any terror attack -- saying the shooting erupted when security tried to stop a man from entering the club with a gun.
