Tragedy struck at famous seaside spot in Brazil Thursday night.
A car plowed into a crowd at the famous Copacabana beach reportedly killing an 8 month oid child and wounding many others.
According to eye witness accounts, the driver hit several people at the boardwalk around 8 p.m. local time.
The black sedan ended up going another 15 metres before it finally came to a stop in the sand.
According to Rio police, at least 15 people were rushed to hospital with injuries.
Among the known victims are the baby, who was pronounced dead at Copacabana's Urgent Care Centre, two children and seven adults.
Police officers quickly arrested the driver, who was taken to a local police station.
Epilepsy drugs were later found inside the car.
One witness noted “People wanted to lynch the driver, but police at the scene prevented it. There were a lot of people run down.”
There has been no further word on the condition of the others injured or of any charges against the driver.
