A frightening scenario played out in Mississauga on Friday morning that saw a cargo van smash through a concrete sound barrier and onto the westbound lanes of the QEW.
The OPP believes the van was heading southbound on Dixie Rd. in Mississauga when something went wrong.
It mounted the curb at the sharp intersection with North Service Rd., smashing through the concrete wall that seperates the surface streets from the highway.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the van landed in the westbound lanes of the QEW, in the path of an oncoming transport truck.
The big-rig collided with the van, causing serious damage and collecting 5 other vehicles.
Police say only the driver of the van was hurt.
He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Westbound lanes of the QEW were shut down for several hours so that crews could clean up the debris and police could collect evidence.
Investigators have no reason to believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
They suspect that the van was involved in an earlier collision not far away, at Queensway and Dixie Rd., in the moments before the van hit the wall.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
