No, bike lanes have not suddenly been added to Canada's busiest highway.
And yet tow truck driver Wayne Edward's dashcam caught a cyclist gliding across Hwy 401. It happened Monday at around noon near Hwy 427.
Video shows the cyclist, dressed in a neon reflective vest or jacket, riding across four live lanes of the highway and climbing off their bike next to the centre median.
"That's someone just taking their lives in their hands, it is unbelievably dangerous," OPP Sgt Kerry Schmidt tells NEWSTALK 1010. "As a motorist, you have no time to react. You're going along at highway speeds and someone runs in front of you, you don't know what to do. As a pedestrian (or cyclist), it's very hard to judge the closing distance on vehicles coming toward you."
Schmidt stresses that pedestrians and cyclists are forbidden on highways like the 401 and rule-breakers could be charged.
