It'll be the end of next winter before we know the fate of Toronto Police constable James Forcillo.
His lawyers wrapped up the first round of legal arguments in the officer's appeal on Tuesday afternoon.
Forcillo is the cop found guilty of attempted murder in the 2013 streetcar shooting death of 18-year old Sammy Yatim.
Lawyers representing the officer spent 2 days at the Ontario Court of Appeal this weeking trying to have the verdict overturned.
With the opening stage of the appeal complete, the officer's legal team will argue some time before next April that information released after Forcillo's trial could have changed the way the jury understood his case.
Forcillo's lawyers want to present a recent University of Toronto study, along with expert testimony, that centres on how stress affects first responders like police officers.
If the panel of judges agrees with Forcillo, it could set up a scenario where a new trial is ordered.
The date of the 'fresh evidence' hearing will be set some time in the near future.
