If you're heading up north for the long weekend, keep in mind that Hwy 400 is once again a big construction zone through the Barrie area this summer.
Several bridges are being reconstructed to allow for future widening of the highway to 10 lanes.
Crews will also be replacing the centre median from Innisfil Beach Rd to Mapleview Dr.
As you drive north, you start to spot the construction orange at Davis Dr near Newmarket. The lanes have been repainted, and the speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h through the construction zones.
Some of the work will require lane closures this summer, but Astrid Poei with the ministry of transportation says the disruptions will be minor and happen in off-peak hours, mostly between 11 pm and 7 am on weekdays.
She says work will be stopped on weekends starting this week, to minimize disruption during the busy summer season when people are heading to their cottages. Crews will stop working from about noon on Fridays until Monday morning, or Tuesdays on long weekends.
Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman says he hopes drivers understand that this road work must be completed, for the future benefit of those who live in Barrie and those who use Hwy 400.
"The reality of construction is it's short-term pain for long-term gain," he says.
