A 10-year-old girl remains in hospital in critical condition after being hit by a car in a residential area of Ajax.
Durham police say they were called to the Seward Drive and Carpendale Crescent area at about 8:20 a.m. Monday.
In a media release, they say a Hyundai Elantra was approaching a group of children waiting for the school bus when the girl, "entered the roadway and was struck."
The driver of the car is an 18-year-old man from Ajax.
"It's a very residential area," Durham Regional Police Const. George Tudos said earlier Monday. "It's a lot of roundabouts and a lot of homes and schools. So there's going to be a lot of pedestrian traffic within this area, especially during the hours in which the collision took place, it's just before school."
It is not clear where the girl is a student but Roméo Daillare Public School is about a five minute walk from the crash site.
Tudos says the girl suffered head injuries. She was rushed by ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto.
Parents in the area say it comes as no surprise that this nightmare scenario played out in their neighbourhood. People who live nearby say that given how careless and obnoxious some drivers can be, it was only a matter of time before somebody got hurt.
Some say the Town of Ajax isn't doing enough to control traffic, especially because local residents say they raised the issue with officials several years ago.
NEWSTALK 1010's James Moore spoke to some of the parents.
This comes a few days after a Toronto boy was killed on his way home from school.
The six-year-old was hit by an SUV across from Morrish Public School where he was senior kindergartner. The boy had been walking with his mother.
Const. Clint Stibbe tells NEWSTALK 1010 no determination has been made yet about any charges in the case.
