Toronto's Kensington Market gets a close-up in a new Heritage Minute.
The vignette follows the life of a single storefront through the decades, morphing from butcher's shop to fishmonger to grocery to boutique and eatery. Historica Canada says the animation is meant to highlight the role of Kensington and communities like it in providing newcomers to Canada a home and a place to open a business.
The voice of the narrator of this Heritage Minute is one familiar to NEWSTALK 1010 listeners: Tom Mihalik, owner of Tom's Place on Baldwin St.
Mihalik's father came to Canada from Hungary in 1956 and opened a second-hand clothing store in Kensington Market two years later. The rest of the family eventually joined the business, including Tom at the age of 12.
