Despite the warnings from Toronto police, a local diving expert has to admit he's impressed by a BASE jumping video that has quickly gone viral.
"That looks kind of cool actually," says Adam Mabee, president of Parachute School of Toronto Ltd. "Myself I don't care for that falling sensation that you get from a BASE jump, whereas you don't get that sensation going out of an airplane."
"But I've got to say something like this, it looks pretty exciting."
The video - of Mike the Plumber as he's described himself to CBC Toronto - has quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views, showing the diver at the top of an Etobicoke highrise on Christmas day.
He quickly exchanges messages of "Merry Christmas" with a friend who scaled the building with him, before leaping down and quickly pulling his parachute.
Another video posted on social media shows the jump from his view.
It's also caught the attention of Toronto Police.
Police spokeswoman Const. Caroline de Kloet says the alleged jumper had fled by the time officers arrived at the highrise on Marine Parade Drive.
De Kloet says the person has not been identified and is not currently facing charges, though she says charges are possible in these types of incidents if the accused broke into a property.
She says BASE jumping is "extremely dangerous'' not only to the jumper but also to the public since it's hard to know where the person will land.
Mabee said while he admires the skill of the jumper, he gets calls on a monthly basis of people inquiring about BASE jumping when these sorts of videos go viral, who have no understanding of what it takes to do it safely.
"I have to pop peoples bubbles that you can jump right into this," he said.
Mabee said most BASE jumpers have tons of experience with skydiving or parachuting and eventually get into BASE jumping for more of a thrill.
He said 100 to 200 skydives would probably be the minimum requirement to being BASE jumping and if you want to try jumping in a wing suit, you probably need a minimum of 300 jumps experience.
"People who have been watching too much YouTube and think hey, this looks really cool," he said.
