A mother and her five-year-old daughter are dead after being hit by two different cars while attempting to cross a busy Scarborough street mid-block.
The horror unfolded as family of four was leaving dinner at a plaza near Warden Ave and Continental Pl, north of Ellesmere Rd at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
NEWSTALK 1010 has obtained video of the moments before the crash. While we have chosen not to show the moment of impact some viewers may find the video to be disturbing.
Surveillance video from a nearby business shows a man holding a child and a woman gripping the hand of another. They stand at the edge of the road for more than a minute waiting for an opening as cars and trucks whizz by. The nearest signalled crossings are 200-300 metres away.
Eventually, the video shows the family dashing across Warden with the father slightly ahead. A silver car headed northbound enters the frame and slams into the 33-year-old woman and her five-year-old, sending them flying. The woman came down hard in the southbound lanes and was run over by a second car. That driver took off from the scene.
Investigators believe their car to be a 2006-2011 black Honda, maybe a Civic that is now missing a piece of black plastic molding from its right wheel well.
Police are asking for the driver of that car to call them and for anyone else with information to do the same at 416-808-1900.
The deaths of the woman and child are the 22nd and 23rd deaths of pedestrians on Toronto streets in 2017. At this point last year there were 28 pedestrian fatalities.
