One man is dead and another person is in critical condition after an early morning fire at a downtown Toronto residential building.
Toronto Fire Capt. Adrian Ratushniak says crews were called to the two-storey building that has multiple residential units shortly before 5:30 a.m. Monday.
He says the fire was believed to have begun in the basement, but eventually spread to the majority of the building and nearly destroyed the structure.
He says two people were taken to hospital in critical condition, and one man died shortly after arriving.
His identity has not been released, and Ratushniak says it's not yet known whether he or the other injured person lived in the building.
Ratushniak says the fire is now under control and under investigation both internally and through the Ontario Fire Marshall's office.
