Ontario is ready to give teachers a raise, but educators want more money.
The province is in talks with teacher unions on new contracts. According to CTV Toronto, Queen's Park is prepared to boost salaries by 1%, the same raise given to CUPE support staff in their new contract.
Unions representing elementary and high school teachers don't think it's enough and actually amounts to a cut, because it doesn't keep up with inflation.
Queen's Park claims it would cost taxpayers $1.5 billion to pay teachers 2% more over a 4 year-contract The government claims the average teacher in Ontario makes almost $93, 000.
A 1% raise would boost the average salary by more than $3700 per year by the end of four years.
