The Russian ambassador to Turkey has been assassinated at an embassy-sponsored photographic exhibition in Ankara.
Witnesses say a man in a suit and tie fired at least eight shots, wounding Ambassador Andrei Karlov and three others.
An Associated Press photographer reports the gunman approached the ambassador as he lay on the floor and shot him at least one more time at close range.
The attacker shouted slogans about Syria's civil war before he was shot and killed by police.
Tomorrow the Russian, Turkish and Iranian foreign and defence ministers will meet in Moscow to discuss Syria.
