The Toronto anesthesiologist who was convicted of sexually assaulting 21 sedated women during surgery wants a new trial.
Lawyers for Dr. George Doodnaught are at Osgoode Hall this week appealing his conviction.
Lawyer Brian Greenspan argues that it was physically impossible for the sexual assault to be committed in a busy and crowded operating room without being noticed, and he claims the women must have been hallucinating.
"I absolutely reject all of those arguments because it happened," says Debra Dreise, one of the victims.
Dreise says she has had to force herself to stay seated as she watched the appeal process unfold.
"It's been overwhelming," she says.
Doodnaught was sentenced to 10 years behind bars after his conviction in 2013. The incidents happened at the North York General Hospital between 2006 and 2010, but to Dreise it feels like just yesterday.
"I can still smell him," she says.
For now, his medical license has been suspended. The College of Physicians and Surgeons will only look at whether it should be revoked after the appeal process is done.
