An Air Canada flight from Jamaica to Toronto was diverted to Orlando, after authorities say a passenger became aggressive, attacked the crew with coffee pots and tried to open a cabin door.
A federal criminal complaint says crew members and other passengers secured Brandon Michael Courneyea using zip ties.
Orlando television station WFTV reports the FBI was contacted around 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
Investigators said Courneyea yelled at passengers for ``looking at him.''
They allege he then grabbed a coffee pot from the galley and swung it at crew members before saying it would ``only take one guy to take the plane down.''
One of the people who jumped in to help, was Toronto City Councillor Michael Thompson.
"We attempted to reason with him, to talk to him and to try and get him to calm down." said Thompson.
When that didn't work, the man grabbed the coffee pot and started swinging, and trying to dump hot coffee on people.
Thompson was one of them.
"I had a particular encounter with a hot coffee pot."
When the man lunged for a rear door and started pulling the lever, that's when Thompson and several other passengers jumped the guy and physically restrained him.
The city councillor admits their intent was never to injure the man, just to hold him down until authorities could take over in Orlando.
As for what set the guy off, Thompson wasn't sure.
"I didn't smell any alcohol, or anything like that."
The man was arrested on arrival in Orlando and now faces several charges.
